Prompt number:

This week’s prompt is designed to give couples a quiet moment of reflection during a shoot, and to share with each other some of the emotions that have prompted them to want these photos in the first place! It’s a great prompt for engagements, weddings, maternity and anniversary shoots.

Let out the intimate: prompts to give the gift of emotion

This works beautifully as a special moment together for a just-married couple at the end of their romantic session, before re-joining wedding guests. You could choose a question they didn’t address in their wedding vows (give the gift of insight into the other’s love).

How to use this photo pose prompt

Use a transition prompt such as Imagination Land to get your couple in the right headspace to share honestly, if you have been doing more active, energetic shots prior to this. Give each a question to think about for a few minutes (e.g. as you change locations). When ready, ask them to cuddle face-to-face and share their answers. Put a long lens on and let them know you’ll be shooting from a distance, so they can share privately. Use one question per location or moment; these are not meant to be rapid-fire questions! One used thoughtfully at the right moment gives the couple the gift of feeling the emotion as well as a beautiful photograph.

Prompt: Let out the intimate

  • When were you most proud of (Partner)?
  • How has (Partner) changed you?
  • Why is (Partner) so important to you?
  • What makes you most happy when you spend time together?
  • What do you love about (Partner’s) best characteristics?
  • What are you most excited for in your life together?
  • What are you excited for in 10 years’ time? Where do you see yourselves?
  • How has he/she changed you?
  • When did you last cry together?
  • When are you two at your best?

Creative extension

  • Move around and capture each person’s face as they look at their partner and share (don’t limit yourself to one angle). Shoot details (a hand on cheek or small of the back, eyelashes, wedding rings).
  • Look for creative framing and lighting opportunities to use during this prompt. Backlight and silhouette, the setting sun, spotlight of sun in shadow, archways, overhanging trees as frame, shoot through branches or leaves.
