A bit about me

Hi! I’m Jemma, the photographer behind the Promptographer Guide. I’ve been a professional photographer since 2017, and a hobbyist for over ten years before that. I’ve tested these prompts over and over with real clients and refined them based on my years of experience, to give you an easy, fast way to spark new ideas and elicit moments filled with beautiful, real emotions in the field.

When I launched as a professional photographer in 2017, I wanted to level up from the photos I’d been taking of friends and family for over ten years as a hobbyist. I love the naturalness of lifestyle photography, and when I discovered the idea of photo prompts, I knew I’d found the easy way I was looking for to take beautiful, natural photographs of my clients.

I created the Promptographer Guide because I needed an easy way to access and remember prompts that were appropriate for different circumstances. I know what it’s like to feel put on the spot in the field, and to feel like you’re stuck on the same old ideas over and over. That’s where the Guide comes in: I wanted it to be widely accessible and useful to you. With the Promptographer Guide, you’ll delivery photos filled with emotion and real moments, every time.

How is the Promptographer Guide different to other photo prompt products?

The Promptographer Guide is curated and tested to make sure every prompt card delivers value. I think we can all agree that there’s no shortage of photo inspiration online. What’s harder than finding inspiration is accessing that inspiration in the field when working with clients. I brought everything together in one rich, idea-generating place so that you can quickly and easily get a boost of creativity at a glance.

The prompts in the Guide always remain curated: no double-ups, no single-use-only cards, no pose ideas consisting of no more than “put your clients in this position and snap”. There’s nothing wrong with pose ideas like this, of course, but I wanted something rich and efficient. That’s my vision for the Promptographer Guide.

Another way the Guide is different is that every prompt is a rich idea-generator. Each prompt is not just a single idea or single pose, but rather a suite of related ideas. This means that you can use just a few prompts to build a whole shoot. You’ll spend more time working naturally with clients and less time shuffling through shot lists. Photo ideas put photographers at risk of barking unrelated commands at clients, leaving them feeling like performing monkeys. But with the Promptographer Guide, I’ve collated a set of related ideas onto each card, so your session moves in a relaxed flow.

Finally, the Guide is different to other photo prompt products in that it’s fully customisable, to meet you at your point of need. There are over 50 curated prompts currently in the Guide. When the App launches, you’ll be able to customise your own photoshoots from the prompts that meet the unique needs of the people you photograph.

How do I use the Promptographer Guide?

Every photographer will find their own rhythm of how they best use the Guide. As a starting point, this is what you can do:

  1. Get to know who you’re going to be photographing. Are they extroverts or introverts? What do they want out of their session?
  2. Design your session by choosing 5 to 10 prompts to use in the field.
  3. Order the prompts into a natural flow, considering your clients’ personalities: will you start excited and active then tone down to intimate prompts, or visa versa?
  4. In the field, refer to your prompts as you need to during the shoot. Let them remind and spark ideas for what you want to achieve.
